Oftentimes, a person would not keep in mind a criminal lawyer in his contact files unless the need arises. On other cases, some states require that the client pays the attorney a particular amount based on his financial situation or however the court determines the amount he should pay based on how much he could afford.

There are both advantages and disadvantages in hiring a public defendant or court-appointed criminal lawyer over someone personally hired. On most cases, a public defender would not have enough time to get to know his client's case compared to a private attorney. However, a public defendant definitely knows the applicable state court system very well. Typically, he has had and still has a working relationship with the prosecutors in that particular state and should be able to work efficiently with these prosecutors and the case judges. A personally-hired criminal lawyer could only be advantageous in the sense that it can offer going through the case more thoroughly than a public defendant.
